The Pre-School follows the six Early Learning Goals in the Foundation Stage Curriculum which provide a framework to ease children into mainstream schooling. Click to find out more.
Language, Literacy and Communication
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Children are supported in developing confidence and self-respect by being encouraged to work independently as well as part of the group. Through taking part in a varied range of activities, they learn acceptable ways to express their own feelings and respect the feelings of others.
LANGUAGE, LITERACY AND COMMUNICATION
This area of learning includes speaking and listening in different situations and being read a wide range of books. The Grange has a book corner and children are encouraged to spend time looking through a book on a daily basis. Children are also encouraged to develop their vocabulary and co-operation through imaginative role-play and participating in songs and story time.
PROBLEM SOLVING, REASONING AND NUMERACY
This goal helps children to become familiar with sorting, matching, ordering and counting, all activities that form the basis for early mathematics. Songs, games and picture books help them to become aware of number sequences; water and sand play help children discover about shapes, weight, capacity and volume (its great messy fun too!).
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD
This important goal aims to help children develop a sense of interest and curiosity to make sense of the world. The sessions follow an appropriate theme, such as: autumn or animals, the activities of that week are then geared towards exploring that theme. They do this by playing with different materials, role-play, group discussion and stories.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Outdoor play develops their co-ordination, control, balancing and movement. It helps the children gain confidence and enables them to feel the positive benefit of being healthy and active. Indoor play helps to develop the fine motor skills required for writing and handling small objects, e.g. jigsaws, table games and Lego.
CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT
This goal includes art, music, role-play and imaginative play. Children will learn to respond, explore, express and communicate their ideas and use their imagination to explore and research their ideas. They do this through drawing and painting, junk modeling, play dough.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
We encourage the children to try different play activities but they are not forced if they do not wish to do so.
Each child is paired with a Key Worker who keeps a record of their progress in the above goals, to discuss in detail with parents at regular intervals before the child commences mainstream schooling.
